Bridging Sydney

It’s back! Better than ever!

The 75th anniversary in 2007 of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the inspiration for Bridging Sydney, a major exhibition at the Museum of Sydney.

Bridging Sydney presents the rich and extraordinary story of Sydney’s much-loved icon: from the earliest, short-lived schemes of colonial times, through the decades of the late 19th and early 20th centuries – when a series of commissions, advisory boards and competitions resulted in numerous unrealised bridge and tunnel designs. Concluding finally with J.J.C. Bradfield’s vision for Sydney’s transport system and the construction of the dramatic “symphony in steel” – the Bridge was one of the most significant engineering feats of its era. A symbol of the pride and hope it inspired, the Bridge had a dramatic impact on people’s lives creating social upheaval and displacement at the same time as providing much needed employment, scope for urban expansion and a new vision for Sydney.

The inspiration for painters, poets, photographers and thousands of Sydneysiders alike, the exhibition brings together iconic photographs and paintings with key objects including original plans, sketches, building samples and documents.

A feature of the exhibition will be a LEGO model of the bridge, 4 metres long, and over 1 metre high. The bridge will be constructed on-site by the designer, Ross Crawford, over the 2 weeks from 14th to 27th January 2007. You will be able to meet and talk with Ross about his model, which is built from over 11,000 LEGO bricks.

Bridging Sydney is an initiative of the Historic Houses Trust presented in association with the Roads & Traffic Authority and the State Records Authority of NSW.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I’m hoping to organise some photos while I’m there – there aren’t really any good quality shots of the bridge, it would be nice to get some.
